Understated Class Act
With hatchbacks, four-wheel-drive models, MPVs, SUVs, crossovers and all the other variants these days, the traditional saloon has limited appeal, so most manufacturers tend to add sporting credentials to help boost sales.
So the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes C Class all come with a sporty edge and for a long time were the obvious choices. But there is another contender in this sector, one with a prestige name and more exclusivity – the Lexus IS.
It has been around for about 10 years, but the latest models include an F version that has great attraction for executive buyers looking for something that is more distinctive than obvious rivals, and offers excellent performance capability.
The F comes with either a 2.2 litre 148 hp diesel engine from £24,250, or a 2.5 litre V6 petrol model offering 205 hp and priced from £25,620.
My test model was the petrol version with an auto gearbox, and costing £29,700. Top speed is 141 mph, the 0-60 mph time is 8.5 seconds. Combined fuel economy is 33.6 mpg. It was fitted with a 6-speed auto gearbox that was very smooth and with well-spaced ratios for slick, easy driving.
The IS is nicely styled, looking a little understated rather than in your face. It looks classy, exuding premium brand image that is what those buying in this sector tend to require. The IS makes a strong statement on the office car park or at the golf club. And as they are a relatively rare sight in the UK it adds a certain kudos.
The car is visually impressive, low, sleek and despite being a 4-door, at a glance looks more a coupe. The F models have lowered suspension, deep front spoiler and side-skirts. The underside of the car has also been smooth out to minimise wind resistance. Another benefit is that along with other measures such as improving the engine and transmission fittings, there are reduced noise levels, allowing the car to deliver the sort of refinement you would get with a larger more expensive model.
The latest Lexus IS models are slightly longer and wider than previous offerings, that helps provide more room for front and rear occupants, and also improves ride and handling.
It also impresses with superior build quality, immaculate standard of fit and finish and is exceptionally well-equipped.
Standard features include eight airbags, 6-CD autochanger, keyless entry and push-button start, climate control, power windows and mirrors, alloy wheels and front and rear armrests. Flagship models add larger wheels, parking sensors, heated front seats, leather upholstery, rain sensing wipers and cruise control.
The ISF features mesh front grille, rear bootlid spoiler, sports seats, titanium-effect interior trim, sports steering wheel and LED daytime running lights. It’s a tremendous spec for under £30,000.
FOR: Classy Lexus brand image, excellent refined driving dynamics, generous equipment levels.
AGAINST: Beats me!
